What is a Certified Doula?
Doula is a Greek word meaning "woman's servant" and refers to a person who is professionally trained to provide labor support. Doulas provide non-medical support. Their role is to provide physical, emotional, and educational support to mothers and their birth companions throughout labor and delivery. The doula offers support and advice on comfort measures such as relaxation, breathing, position changes and helps bridge communication between the couple and health care professionals. The overall goal is for the parents to have an awesome birth experience.
Why Should I Consider Hiring a Doula?
Imagine having consistent support throughout your entire labor and delivery. In today's society, most women do not have the opportunity to choose the doctor or midwife who will actually deliver their baby. They get the person who is "on call" for the practice when they are ready to deliver. They may or may not have a relationship with this person. There will most likely be nursing changes throughout the course of labor. A Doula provides consistent presence and support when labor begins, even before arrival at the hospital, through delivery. The support from a Doula also decreases pressure on the birth companion, so they too are able to fully experience the birth.
What are the benefits of having a Doula during labor?
Research shows that when a Doula is present at birth, there is a decrease in the need for pain medication, induction, forceps/suction deliveries, a decrease in cesarean sections and overall increased satisfaction with the birth experience. Total birthing time may also be decreased.
